Writing a Global History of the Second World War by Taking Japan Seriously

At the DIJ Forum on October 14, 2025, Sheldon Garon (Princeton University) and Sebastian Conrad (Freie Universität Berlin) will discuss how taking Japan seriously can help us write a truly global history of the Second World War, challenging Eurocentric and America-centric perspectives and discussing Japan’s central role in the transnational dynamics of modern warfare and society.

The Legacy of World War II in American Society and Politics

Eighty years after the end of World War II, this public panel will explore the lasting impact of the war’s conclusion on the development of American society and politics. By connecting international developments with local transformations, the discussion highlights how the war’s aftermath fundamentally reshaped the United States.

The Lives and Afterlives of Amateur Soldier-Photography in World War II

The private images that amateur soldier-photographers created during the Second World War are one of its critical material and documentary legacies. As examples of amateur photography, a cultural practice shared across boundaries of time, space, and ideology, these images demand consideration from interdisciplinary and transnational perspectives.

Encounters, Knowledge, and Coping Strategies in a Disrupted World, 1930s-50s” will take place on the 13th and 14th of February 2025 in Mumbai, India. The conference is organized by Simone Lässig (German Historical Institute Washington), Sebastian Schwecke (Max Weber Forum for South Asian Studies, Delhi), and Swen Steinberg (Queen’s University, Kingston), in collaboration with Christoph K. Neumann (OI Istanbul), Maria Framke (Erfurt University), and Jens Hanssen (OI Beirut).

The international conference „Wartime Occupations in Europe (20th-21st centuries). Socio-historical perspectives“ will take place at CERCEC-EHESS in Paris on the 7th and 8th of November 2024. This conference is part of activities conducted by the “War and Society in Central and Eastern Europe (20th-21st centuries)” Research Alliance (EURETES, EHESS – MESR) that brings together CERCEC-EHESS, Charles University in Prague and Lviv Center of Urban History. It is supported by the Osteuropa Network of the Max Weber Foundation, the German Historical Institute in Paris and the Marc Bloch Center (Berlin) and also part of the foundation-wide event series “Ends of War – International Perspectives on World War II” of the Max Weber Foundation.
